Reviews, Reddit and the sources AI actually trusts

When a team asks how to appear in AI answers, the conversation often starts with its own website. That is a sensible place to check the facts. It is only part of the picture when a buyer asks which product to choose.
In our review of 1.2 million answers last quarter, we logged the sources cited alongside the responses. The useful pattern was not a secret list of domains that every engine “trusts.” It was a connection between the question being asked and the kind of page that could answer it directly.
Here, trust is shorthand for observed citation patterns. A citation does not reveal a model’s internal reasoning, guarantee that a page is accurate or tell us how much influence a source had on the final recommendation.
Start with the question, then inspect the source
A broad recommendation, a feature check and an implementation question ask for different evidence. A comparison page might help someone build a shortlist. A current product document may be the better source for a precise integration limit.
We therefore group sources by the job they perform in the answer. Looking at domain frequency alone can miss the difference between a publisher cited repeatedly for one narrow topic and one used across many distinct buying questions.
For each observation, keep the prompt, response, cited URL and claim the source appears to support. Open the page. Check whether the relevant statement is present, current and specific to the product being discussed.
Reviews and comparisons help with shortlists
In the category-recommendation questions we reviewed, review and comparison pages were a recurring source. Their usefulness is straightforward: they put alternatives and decision criteria in the same place, often in language close to a buyer’s question.
That does not make every directory worth pursuing. A listing that never appears in your tracked answers may be a lower priority than a specialist comparison page that repeatedly does. Use the observed source map to order the work.
Review your own profile before asking for more exposure. Product category, pricing basis, integration lists and company descriptions should be accurate. If a page misstates a limitation, provide the publisher with a clear correction and a public source that supports it.
Community discussions add practical context
Reddit and specialist forums appeared prominently in parts of our sample, particularly in the Perplexity answers we checked. Useful threads often addressed a concrete situation: what failed during a migration, which tool worked for a small team, or what a feature could not do.
The appropriate response is to participate where you can contribute. Answer the actual question, explain your affiliation and distinguish direct experience from opinion. A post built only to insert a brand name is a poor resource for the person who opened the discussion.
Do not treat community participation as a request for a guaranteed citation. A contribution should remain useful if no engine ever references it. That is a better editorial standard than trying to make every thread carry a commercial message.
Engines cite sources that answer the question directly. Your homepage usually doesn’t.
Owned pages remain the reference for product facts
For questions about pricing, features and published security information, the current product site gives a company a place to state its own facts clearly. That makes maintaining it important even when other sources are prominent in category recommendations.
Put the answer where a buyer would expect to find it. Link related material, explain qualifications and distinguish current information from archived announcements. A broad homepage promise is rarely enough to resolve a detailed product question on its own.
Access matters too. OpenAI’s search guidance identifies crawler and infrastructure access as eligibility considerations and makes clear that placement is not guaranteed. Treat access as a prerequisite to check, rather than a promise of a recommendation.
Build a source queue you can act on
Give each relevant URL an owner and a next action. Useful categories include correcting a wrong fact, improving an owned reference, contributing a missing practical explanation and requesting a fair product-profile update.
Prioritize recurring sources with specific gaps. Record when a source changes, then continue testing the associated questions. A new link and an improved answer are separate observations, and several changes may overlap before a trend becomes visible.
The sample behind this article is directional evidence for planning work, not a universal ranking formula. Your category, market and question set can produce a different source mix. The Corvid case study shows how a source map can become an engagement plan without assuming every publication deserves equal effort.
